This piece is inspired by the 1925 Hemingway short story, "The End of Something". It is an adaptation of the climactic scene in the story where Nick Adams breaks up with his girlfriend, Marjorie.

Marjorie asks Nick what is bothering him, and Nick explains that, “It isn’t fun anymore." Marjorie recognizes his words as the end of the relationship and she leaves, while Nick lies face down on a blanket.

In 1916, American poet Robert Frost composed the poem, "Out, Out-". It is essentially a recast of the "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" passage from Shakespeare's Macbeth. It references the line spoken by Macbeth, "...out, out brief candle...". The poem tells the story of a young man who tries to grow up too fast and has his youthful life cut short when he is mortally wounded in a freak buzz-saw accident. In this cover painting of the poem I wanted to loosely illustrate the tender innocence of youth juxtaposed by the jagged ruthlessness of life.

The invaders in this piece are allowed to exist only for a short time as Wells uses a literary plot device to abruptly end the invasion - "Dues Ex Machina" or, "God from the machine". The phrase is a plot twist whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the inspired and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. In the case of this painting they will return, and next time they come they will be ready.

The Latin title is taken from the Roman poet Horace and means "it is sweet and honorable...", followed by pro patria mori, which means "to die for one's country". Owen calls it the great lie.

Percy Bysshe Shelley captures Ecclesiastes perfectly in this poem. Regrettably, it has become apparent that, our cogs are slowing. I have always been intrigued with this poem and it parallels with the book of Ecclesiastes. Here Shelley is simply packaging a biblical theme in a new and poetic skin. I have no doubt the he must have asked himself, "...indeed, is there truly anything new under the sun?"
